About this story

It's Theo's first week at Maple Elementary, and lunchtime is the hardest part: he's left his lunch at home, his stomach growls across the whole table, and down the table, Lily, Kofi, and Sam each notice — but each figure someone else will share. Then Theo re-checks his lunchbox and finds one perfect, golden sandwich gleaming inside. 'Hi! I'm Sammy!' it says cheerfully. And Sammy has a magic rule: take a shared bite, and your favorite flavor bubbles up in its place — strawberry jam for Lily, a crunchy pickle for Kofi, sharp cheddar for Sam. Sammy grows more delicious with every share. But when greedy Grady grabs him and dashes off to eat him alone, the golden bread turns gray and soggy — 'I only stay wonderful when I'm shared.' A funny, warm story about noticing who has nothing, sharing the first bite, and the magic that only works out loud.

  • Embarrassing — making you feel shy or red-faced in front of others
  • Golden — bright and shiny like gold
  • Nibble — to take a small, careful bite
  • Greedy — wanting all of something for yourself
  • Soggy — droopy and heavy with wetness
  • Deflate — to shrink down, like air leaving a balloon
  • Offer — to hold something out to someone
  • Cheerful — happy and full of good spirits, like Sammy

What Parents Say

Families sharing their experiences with our books and family safety tools.

After reading this, my daughter started asking about how lighthouses work and we ended up looking up videos together. Anything that gets her that curious is a win in my book.
Priya K.Book · The Lighthouse of Bright Minds
The rhythm of this book is so soothing. It's become our Sunday-morning read. The river metaphor opened up a real conversation about listening to nature with my kids.
Sofia L.Book · The Day We Listened to the River
A beautiful, quiet story. On high-energy days my 6-year-old can't sit through it, but on calm evenings it's perfect. The language is genuinely lovely.
