About this story

Mira loves lying in the grass watching clouds — rabbits, dragons, castles — and wishing she could fix the plain gray lumps. Then one evening, beneath the old oak tree, she finds a wooden box tied with a silver ribbon: three paintbrushes (gold, silver, starlight-colored) and a note in curling letters: 'Paint gently. Paint kindly. What you make, the wind will keep.' With a sweep of the gold brush, a gray cloud curls into a fluffy-maned lion, and soon the whole town gathers in the park each evening to watch cloud-fish, cloud-dragons, and a parade of cloud-elephants. But when a boy named Oscar asks to try and paints a jagged, spiky creature that frightens the crowd, Mira shows him what the note really meant. A sky-full story about creativity, kindness, and sharing the magic.

  • Drift — to float along slowly, like clouds
  • Curiosity — wanting to know and find out
  • Sweep — one smooth stroke of a brush
  • Crane — to stretch your neck to see something better
  • Spiky — covered in sharp, pointy edges
  • Kindly — with care for other people's feelings
  • Embarrassment — the red-faced feeling when everyone is watching your mistake
  • Precious — too special to waste, like a treasure

What Parents Say

Families sharing their experiences with our books and family safety tools.

After reading this, my daughter started asking about how lighthouses work and we ended up looking up videos together. Anything that gets her that curious is a win in my book.
Priya K.Book · The Lighthouse of Bright Minds
The rhythm of this book is so soothing. It's become our Sunday-morning read. The river metaphor opened up a real conversation about listening to nature with my kids.
Sofia L.Book · The Day We Listened to the River
A beautiful, quiet story. On high-energy days my 6-year-old can't sit through it, but on calm evenings it's perfect. The language is genuinely lovely.
