A wallet card that names who may collect your child from school, the number to call, and the secret family code word a real pick-up person must know. How to use this with your child
Choose a code word that has nothing to do with your address, your pets or your child's favourite things — and change it if it ever slips out.
Never write the code word on the card. Keep it in your head and your child's head only; the card just reminds you that there is one.
- Rehearse the sentence kindly: "I can go with you only if you know our family word."
- Tell the school which names are on the card, and tell them again whenever the list changes.
- Keep one copy in the school bag and one with the class teacher.
Back-of-card rules
Ages 4–7: "I only go with grown-ups on my list. If someone else says they're here to take me, I tell a teacher and don't go."
Ages 8–10 add: "Even if they know my name, I check the code word first. If it's wrong or they rush me, I say 'I need to check' and go back inside."
Goes well with: the Family Media Agreement for your child's age (5–7, 8–10, 11–13) — promises the child makes, and promises the grown-ups make back.
Print tips
- Print at 100% scale — not “fit to page”, so the sizes stay true.
- Cards print best on thicker paper; laminate them for a school bag or wallet.
- The ink-saver version is outlines only, so children can colour it in themselves.
- Keep one copy on the fridge and one where the family already looks every day.
