About this story
The sky turns dark gray and heavy raindrops begin to fall. Everyone hurries to shelter — everyone except young Rohan, walking alone with no umbrella, soaked and shivering, his schoolbag held over his head in a storm that laughs at it. An awning doesn't help; the wind blows the rain sideways. Then a kind woman comes down the same street under a large umbrella, warm and protected — and she sees him. A gentle smile appears, and she asks softly, 'Would you like to share my umbrella?' Rohan steps under, suddenly warm and protected, and they walk side by side while the rain drums on top like tiny fingers tapping a table — but underneath, everything is quiet and dry. They talk about school and his day, and when Rohan says thank you, the woman shares the wisdom she carries: 'I always try to help others when I can. Sharing kindness makes the world a better place for everyone.' A simple, warm story about strangers who choose kindness.
- Shelter — protection from the storm
- Soak — to get completely wet through
- Shiver — to shake from the cold
- Awnings — the roofs over shop windows
- Stranger — someone you don't know yet
- Grateful — thankfully warm inside, like Rohan
- Kindness — noticing someone in need and helping
- Generous — happy to make room for one more

What Parents Say
Families sharing their experiences with our books and family safety tools.
After reading this, my daughter started asking about how lighthouses work and we ended up looking up videos together. Anything that gets her that curious is a win in my book.
The rhythm of this book is so soothing. It's become our Sunday-morning read. The river metaphor opened up a real conversation about listening to nature with my kids.
A beautiful, quiet story. On high-energy days my 6-year-old can't sit through it, but on calm evenings it's perfect. The language is genuinely lovely.
