About this story
Ryan and Marcus are best friends who live on the same street, and their favorite thing in the world is building together — blocks, sticks, rocks, anything they can find — under the big oak tree in Ryan's backyard. One sunny Saturday they decide on something extra special: a little wooden bridge over the muddy puddle. But Ryan grabs the longest planks and announces, 'I'll be the boss! I know exactly how to build it!' He doesn't wait to hear what Marcus thinks. 'But I have ideas too, Ryan,' Marcus says quietly. 'We should plan it together. That's what friends do.' Ryan builds his own way anyway — and soon his bridge begins to wobble. Creak! Crack! SPLASH! — straight into the muddy puddle. Marcus can't help a small giggle, Ryan's face goes red, and the fight that follows leaves both friends apart and unhappy: one angry, one sorry. A warm, real story about sharing the blueprint, hurt feelings, and the bridges worth rebuilding.
- Blueprint/Plan — the design you agree on before building
- Plank — a long flat board
- Wobble — to shake unsteadily
- SPLASH — the sound of a bridge falling in a puddle
- Giggle — a laugh that slips out at the wrong moment
- Embarrassed — red-faced and upset in front of others
- Apologize — to say sorry and mean it
- Rebuild — to build it again, together this time

What Parents Say
Families sharing their experiences with our books and family safety tools.
After reading this, my daughter started asking about how lighthouses work and we ended up looking up videos together. Anything that gets her that curious is a win in my book.
The rhythm of this book is so soothing. It's become our Sunday-morning read. The river metaphor opened up a real conversation about listening to nature with my kids.
A beautiful, quiet story. On high-energy days my 6-year-old can't sit through it, but on calm evenings it's perfect. The language is genuinely lovely.
