About this story

A warm orange night light glows softly beside the bedroom outlet, chasing the darkest corners away. Jonah snuggles under his blankets, hugging Miso, his gray stuffed cat with button eyes — but the shadows stretch strange against the striped curtains, and Jonah whispers his worries into the dark. Then, when the bedroom quiets, Miso's stitched smile begins to move. Curious and brave, Miso checks every nighttime sound: the hallway vent (just warm air), the scritch-scratch at the window (a friendly tree waving hello), each creak and sigh that felt scary a moment ago. Cat and lamp share the watch — tiny glowing partners in safety — while Jonah's breath quickens and Miso climbs onto his chest, offering calm. By morning, the sounds haven't changed, but the story in Jonah's mind has softened. A gentle, glowing story for bedtime worriers.

  • Glow — a soft, steady light, like the orange night light
  • Comfort — a warm, cozy feeling that makes fear smaller
  • Stitched — sewn together with thread, like Miso's smile
  • Creak — a slow, squeaky sound a quiet house makes
  • Vent — the opening where warm air comes out
  • Guard — to watch over someone and keep them safe
  • Partner — the one who works beside you, like cat and lamp
  • Check — to look gently and find out what something really is

What Parents Say

Families sharing their experiences with our books and family safety tools.

After reading this, my daughter started asking about how lighthouses work and we ended up looking up videos together. Anything that gets her that curious is a win in my book.
Priya K.Book · The Lighthouse of Bright Minds
The rhythm of this book is so soothing. It's become our Sunday-morning read. The river metaphor opened up a real conversation about listening to nature with my kids.
Sofia L.Book · The Day We Listened to the River
A beautiful, quiet story. On high-energy days my 6-year-old can't sit through it, but on calm evenings it's perfect. The language is genuinely lovely.
